Half Mile Bulls raided Retrieve Raiders off of the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court Saturday night, after trampling the number one ranked unbeaten team in the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) Malta Supreme Christmas Open Final.
Banks DIH Non-Alcoholic Brand Manager, Clayton McKenzie (standing second, right) and Linden Manager, Shondel Easton (on his right) along with LABA President, Lawrence Simon (left) join the Bulls’ celebration Saturday night in Linden.
Bulls’ small forward, Michael Turner poured in 17 points, most of which came in a decisive third quarter, and seven rebounds to ensure the youthful Bulls flatten the experienced Raiders 64-47 in what eventually became a lopsided triumph.
National forward, Terron Welch scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds along with his four assists while forward, Travin Dryden scored 11 points and grabbed a mammoth 15 ‘boards’, and five assists to help Bulls stampede Raiders late in the game.
The Retrieve, Mackenzie-based team, with all the former senior national talent could not stop the Bulls rampage in the third and fourth quarters. Forward, Dwayne Roberts finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds while guard, Keon Cameron had 10 points.
Bulls trotted to an early 5-1 lead in the game, but Roberts equalised with a mid-range jumper half way through the first quarter, before ‘turnovers’ entered the game like a sixth man for both teams guaranteeing an offensive slump. The period ended 10-7 for Raiders.
Turner finished an easy put-back in the paint to return the lead to Bulls 11-10 early in the second period. Guard, Kevin Easton’s baseline jumper capped a 10-2 run for Bulls, midway through the quarter.
However, Cameron nailed a huge three-point jumper that equalised at 17-17 before the offensive exchanges that saw Welch completing a floater in the lane to level the game again 24-24. Raiders led 25-24 at the half-time break.
Raiders seemed as though they would have ambushed the western half of Demerara River-based Bulls in the penultimate period when Neil Marks scored a baseline jumper to push Raiders ahead 35-28 in the middle of the quarter.
However, in five minutes, Dryden finished an up-and-under lay-up, Turner a finger-roll to go up 36-35, Welch a put-back and Turner six straight points to chase Raiders out of the venue with an 18-2 run that ensured Bulls a 46-37 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Bulls continued their rampage in the final quarter with the youthful brand of up-tempo basketball that Raiders could not answer. The performance set Bulls on a path of upward mobility after they had reached the national Forbes Burnham Memorial Final last August.
