– court hears
An East Ruimveldt resident was remanded to prison, on Thursday, after he made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged for possession of marijuana.
Milroy Abrams, 50, a vendor, who resides at Lot 14 East Ruimveldt, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on December 30, he allegedly had in his possession 18 grams of cannabis sativa for the purpose of trafficking.
The Magistrate denied his Attorney’s application for bail and remanded him until January 18, when he will appear before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
The defendant was represented by Attorney-at-law, Ronald Daniels, who made a bail application on behalf of his client citing special reasons. The Attorney told the court that the defendant is a father of six and the sole breadwinner for the family.
Daniels stated that his client does not have a criminal background.
However, Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that Police went to Abrams’s house to conduct a search. According to Jones, when the ranks arrived at his residence, he was reluctant to open his door and the lawmen had to force to gain entry into the premises.
The Prosecutor said that upon entering they noticed Abrams flushing a quantity of something down his toilet. The item was retrieved by the police, who suspected that it was marijuana.
Eleven grams of the illegal substance was found in Abrams bedroom in a calabash under his bed.
He was subsequently arrested and told of the offence committed.
Prosecutor Jones objected to bail on the ground that no special reasons were provided to the court by the defendant’s Attorney to satisfy the court.
His objections were upheld by the Magistrate and the defendant was ordered remanded.
