…nine Presidential ponds to be dug
The days of a forested look of Durban Park aback of the 1763 Monument are over. Works are moving apace to make the location into a green space for all to enjoy.
Last week, several pieces of heavy duty machinery were in operation. In an invited comment Oswald Chisholm, Operations Manager Chung Global Enterprise, said that his company began works at the location three weeks ago.
He said the company is undertaking the infrastructural development of D’Urban Park phase one.
“We have completed a major amount of grubbing, removing overburden and replacing it with sand, and loam to make the area into one big green lawn.”
He further noted that in a matter of a few days the area will have concrete drains as well as internal roads in the first phase by the time we reach May 26, 2016 for independence celebrations.
Phase two will see the location having nine ponds representing the nation’s nine Presidents. It will also be outfitted with seating accommodation as well as temporary bleachers to seat at least 500 persons comfortably.
Chisholm in making comparisons to international locations said, “It’s going to be more like how the Washington monument is set up.”
While the cost for the works is not yet readily known Kaieteur News understands that it’s being executed with directives from the Ministry of the Presidency with managerial directives from Larry London among others.
“We are aiming for this place to be green and well manicured for Independence 2016,’ he said. “Already we are in the preparatory stage on the site to make that a reality.”
In retrospect, he said that when his team took over the job at the location sand and loam was already on the location strewn about “without any leveling so we had to come, clean and level it to establish the original level required for land filling.”
As at yesterday excavation began for the drainage parallel to Hadfield Street. All the overburden will also be moved to the location east of the proposed facility to fill out the swampy are there. (Mondale Smith)
