On Wednesday, a resident from Bartica was remanded to prison when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for severing another man’s arm during a brawl.
Christopher Lee, 57, of Hurikabra, Bartica was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge which read that on Sunday, December 27, last, at Hurikabra Gold Field, Bartica, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Devon Evans with the intent to maim, disfigure or to cause him grievous bodily harm.
The Magistrate remanded the accused to prison and transferred the matter to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for January 15, 2016.
According to Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, Evans was reportedly walking in the area stated in the charge when the accused armed himself with a cutlass and attacked him.
The Prosecutor also revealed that Evans is currently hospitalized awaiting surgery as his arm was severed during the scuffle. The Prosecutor objected to bail due to the seriousness of the crime.
However, the accused told the Court that the particulars of the charge are incorrect. He claimed that on the day in question, he was attacked by eight men, one of whom was Evans.
Lee added that he is unsure which of the men dealt him a chop to his foot with a cutlass. He claimed that when the man “fired another chop” at him he ducked and Evans suffered the blow instead.
