A 22-year-old goldminer was yesterday warned by the Chief Magistrate to desist from assaulting the mother of his child, when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Compton Higgins, of Friendship Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara dealt Bernadina O’Neil several cuffs and slaps about her face after accusing her of cheating on him with a taxi driver. The assault resulted in the woman sustaining injuries.
The incident occurred on December 27 at their home.
Higgins had initially denied hitting the woman but later admitted that he only slapped her once. For the charge against him, he was reprimanded and discharged after O’Neil told the court that she depends on him to maintain their family.
She explained that it was the first time that the man had assaulted her.
Magistrate Ann McLennan placed Higgins on a bond to keep the peace for one year. Failure to comply with the conditions of the bond will see him serving a three-month prison term. The Magistrate gave him a stern warning. She told him that he cannot be hitting and slapping at the woman. According to the Magistrate “women are here to be loved.”
She told him that if he wants no one to speak to the woman, he should put her in a “glass case”.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that the two parties live together and have a child. He said that on the day in question, Higgins checked the woman’s cellular phone and saw several strange phone numbers. According to the Prosecutor, Higgins became annoyed and slapped and cuffed O’Neil about her face.
When given a chance to explain his side of the story, Higgins claimed that a taxi driver texted his phone informing O’Neil that “the night was good”. The man claimed that he acted out of vexation.
However, O’Neil denied having any relationship with the taxi driver. She told the court that she merely uses the taxi driver’s car as a mode of transportation to and from work.
