– victim given compensation
A resident from Leguan Island, Essequibo, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday, after assaulting his relative with a cutlass.
Darren Chowtee, 36, of lot 7 Richmond Hill, Leguan, Essequibo, pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on December 26, at Leguan, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Takeram Persaud.
The Magistrate ordered him to pay $75,000 as compensation to the victim. Failure to pay the fine will see him serving a six- month prison term.
According to the prosecution, on the day in question at 21:50hrs, Chowtee went into a local bar armed with a cutlass, confronted Persaud and dealt him several lashes about the body. The confrontation came about after Chowtee heard of the victim making threats to his brother.
The court heard that Chowtee threatened to sever the complainant’s neck.
The matter was reported and Persaud was treated at the Leguan Public Hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.
Persaud told the court that he and his attacker have agreed to settle the matter.
