Retrieve Raiders advanced to the final of this year’s Linden Amateur Basketball Association’s Malta Supreme Christmas Open basketball championship final via a forfeited result for them when their opponents Amelia’s Ward Jets refused to continue their game Monday night with the scores reading in the second quarter 21-10 for the Raiders with 8 mins 17 secs left. The other semifinal between Half Mile Bulls and Victory Valley Royals had to be pushed back to last night after the first quarter ended 11-7 for the Bulls due to rain at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.
It was an abrupt end to the first semifinal contest where the unbeaten Raiders were ranked number one after ending the preliminary round with an unblemished record. The Jets, who lost to Raiders in round robin play, complained that the MSC surface was not proper to play on after some rain during the contest. But the court was not wet according to the game officials and after giving Jets some time to consider the conditions, the team through its captain Parrish Cadogan said they would not continue.
Secretary of the LABA Joseph Chapman said that he personally intervened before the game was called off as he explained that the game officials were the ones making the call and would determine if the conditions for play were good.
Chapman said that the Jets bluntly refused to continue their game in the presence of scores of fans who were watching the encounter.
The LABA official said that the matter will be dealt with soon by the association and sanctions will most likely follow.
