Zeelandia/Maria’s Pleasure defeated Sans Souci Jaguars by 39 runs to win the final of the Badri Prasad Memorial T20 cricket title on Sunday at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground in Good Success.
Navishaul Pooran and Ricardo Adams added 87 for the second wicket to guide Zeelandia/Maria’s Pleasure to 163-7 after they were inserted in front of a fair-sized crowd before pacer Leorayan Ramlakhan claimed four wickets to restrict the Jaguars.
Zeelandia/Maria’s Pleasure lost opener Ryan Adams who was caught by wicket-keeper Rashaad Rasheed off fast bowler Siddiq Mohamed for four, but Pooran and Ricardo Adams anchored the innings with sensible batting on a decent pitch. Adams played fluently, striking four fours and one six before he was caught on the over boundary off Dellon Osbourne for 32. Pooran however continued to time the ball well, smashing Osbourne for a four and a six, but in a attempt to increase the scoring rate he was trapped in front by the said bowler for 43 (1×4,3×6). The Jaguars fought back through some tidy bowling led by Osbourne who finished with 3-26. Siddiq Mohamed, Zameer Zaman, Imran Mohamed and Nokta Moses had one each.
Ramlakhan who bowled with pace and aggression rocked the Jaguars top order early on. The twenty-one year-old fast bowler had Imran Mohamed (06) caught before he uprooted the stumps of Nokta Moses (01) while Bernard Lewis bowled Zaman (06). Ramlakhan then bowled Kevon Hendricks (00) before Safraz Mohamed and Siddiq Mohamed steady the chase somewhat with a fifth-wicket stand of 30. Safraz Mohamed struck Ricardo Adams to the long-on boundary but was caught and bowled by the said bowler the very next delivery for 13.
However, Siddiq Mohamed kept his team in the hunt- he clobbered four fours and three maximums before he was lbw to off-spinner Kennard Lewis for 40. The Jaguars then lost a few quick wickets to be reduced to 98-9, but Derwin Daniels and Beesham Moses shared in a last wicket stand of 26 as their team finished on 124-9. Daniels hit a little cameo, hitting one four and two maximums to finish on 20 while Moses ended on 12. Man-of-the-match Ramlakhan claimed 4-9 off fours overs while Bernard Lewis and Kennard Lewis had two each.
Ryan Adams and Imran Khan of Good Success SC pocketed the best batsman and bowler accolades respectively while both teams received trophies.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Oudit Persaud who sponsored the competition in memory of his late father and former businessman Badri Prasad congratulated both teams and lauded the Wakenaam Cricket Committee (WCC) for a well organised tournament. He pledged his continued support adding that next year’s competition will be bigger and better.
WCC secretary Nazeer Mohamed thanked the sponsor and called on the business community for their backing.
