Milerock crumble against Rockers 5-1, Winners Connection beat Amelia’s Ward 1-0
The hopes of Petra Organisation Champions Milerock’s of advancing to this year’s Upper Demerara Football Association GT Beer semifinals were dashed as they crumbled to the might of Net Rockers 5-1, while reigning champions Winners Connection overcame the challenge of Amelia’s Ward Panthers by a 1-0 score to make it to the final four slots in the Upper Demerara Football Association’s GT Beer football third annual championship Sunday night last at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
Net Rockers trounced their opponents behind a brace from defender Deshawn Joseph who shot in goal number one for the Rockers from the penalty spot after the defence of the Milerock were pressured forcing them to foul a player in the 32nd minute resulting with the penalty.
This 1-0 advantage remained up to half time and going into the second period of regulation play Milerock folded when there was a ‘handled’ ball which allowed for another penalty being awarded to the Rockers side in the 53rd minute where Joseph stepped up and scored his second goal as the score read 2-0.
Being down 2-0, Milerock never recovered and found themselves in a fix to respond with their usual football creativity. Four minutes later the former standout player for the four times Digicel National School champions, Christianburg Wismar Secondary, Shane Luckie, sent a cross into the 6 yard box where forward Denzil Pryce slapped home to score in the 57th minute as Rockers led 3-0.
Luckie continued to be involved in the play and when his team was awarded a free kick in the 65th minute he banged the ball ferociously to score from outside the 18 yard box, making it a 4-0 score for the Rockers.
Still looking for their complete domination, Rockers would extend that lead with a 75th minute strike when Orande Wills received a squared ball from Deshawn Joseph and completed the play scoring as the Rockers went up 5-0.
As a consolation, Milerock would reduce that big deficit when midfield player Ron Fiedtkou would score for Milerock in the 86th minute as the game would end 5-1 for Rockers.
The night cap game saw both teams being unable to convert clear chances but this was after Winners Connection had scored within the first five minutes but referee Maurice Skeete quite rightly overruled that goal since there was an off-side violation. However, the game would be competitive without goals being scored with the chances which came their way.
Keon Sears would be able to get the game winner when the ball was being cleared by the Panthers defence. Sears pounced to slap a volley from on top the 18 yards box that scored in the 38th minute. The scores were unchanged at the end of the first half and play in the final period did not alter the results as the Winners Connection advanced at the expense of Amelia’s Ward Panthers 1-0 and now play Topp XX in the first game tomorrow, while the other will see Net Rockers facing Silver Shattas.
