Yesterday, a vendor was jailed for three years after he pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking charge before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Ramesh Persaud, 48, a Stabroek Market vendor, pleaded guilty to the charge which read, that on December 26, at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, he had in his possession 4.5 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. The Magistrate also fined Persaud $30,000.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that on the day in question, police ranks were on patrol in the Stabroek Market, when they saw Persaud acting in a suspicious manner.
The ranks approached Persaud and told him that they were ‘plain clothes policemen’. The lawmen later searched him and found the illegal substance in his right side pants pocket.
Persaud was arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station.
