On another good night for football fans in Linden on Boxing Night, home team Silver Shattas sent back Kwakwani Strikers after their game was decided on penalty kicks 4-3 and Topp XX netted three second half goals to eliminate Trainline 3-0, both winners of the night reaching the semifinals of the Upper Demerara Football Association GT Beer year ending soccer championship Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
The first game of the night saw neither side being able to score in open play and after regulation time, the extra period of play was taken.
However this did not alter the scores and penalty kicks were ordered.
This is where the Shattas were able to emerge winners as they connected with their last two shots, after missing their first and scoring their second and thus conversely the Kwakwani Strikers were on target with their first three, but failing in their last two when the game was on the line. In the circumstances Jesse Ward got the final shot in for Shattas and sent his team through.
The second game went slightly in favour of Topp XX over their opponents even though the scores were scoreless after the first period. The Topp XX unit in their first game of the tournament created more chances that their opponents but did not deliver. In one instance striker Shawn Daniels was unable to find the back of the net when his left shot volley landed on the right upright within the first fifteen minutes of play.
After another fifteen minutes of play both Trainline goalkeeper could not measure up to the high lob and the Topp XX goalkeeper was unable to collect cleanly. When the Trainline had a chance come their way they could not it put away. But Topp XX would fail also when three chances went a-begging as Shawn Daniels failed to convert from close in, after his teammate did not capitalize on another clear chance. Then the third opportunity was sent wide of the mark as the first half ended.
However, the fortunes for Topp XX would change and with former National Under-23 player Travis Waterton (54th and 63rd) being involved in the goals for Topp XX.
The first goal for Topp XX came as Waterton made his move inside the 18 yards box where he was brought down and Waterton easily banged home the penalty in the 54th minute. Goal number two came when he made another inroad motoring through to receive a long ball, beating the advancing opposing goalkeeper, to score for Topp XX’s 2-0 advantage.
When the inspirational Collie Hercules came on in the second half, he decided against moving forward after collecting a pass, pushed it back to Waterton who then squared a pass that was collected by Keon Hall (74th minute). The slimly built Hall released a quick-fire shot which zoomed past the startled Trainline defenders who could only watch the ball hit the back of the net as top XX coasted eventually to a 3-0 win and into the semifinals with Silver Shattas.
