– Detectives believe shooting was a hit
Former murder accused, Keron Herbert, who was shot Saturday night while closing his stall at the Vendors’ Arcade, has succumbed to his injuries.
The 29-year-old father of four died in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) around 16:00 hrs yesterday, less than a day after he was shot four times by a lone gunman.
Herbert, of Lot 31 Morocut Square, East La Penitence had sustained injuries to the throat, buttocks, stomach and one of his thighs.
He had also suffered severe damage to his spine and one of his kidneys and doctors had informed his relatives that if had had survived, he would not have been able to walk again.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum last night declined to comment on a possible motive for the execution, other than saying that detectives “were exploring every possibility.”
According to information received, Herbert was busy closing his stall when a man, wearing a white jersey with yellow and green stripes and sporting dreadlocks, walked up and grabbed him from behind.
This newspaper was told that the gunman placed one of his hands around Herbert’s neck and shot him at close range, before calmly leaving the scene.
Investigators have confirmed that they will be reviewing several surveillance videos for clues.
So far, they have received information that the gunman arrived at the location in a white car and stopped in front of a pharmacy. He then exited from the front passenger’s seat and walked to the Vendors’ Arcade.
About six minutes later, the shooter walked back to the car and then sped from the scene with an accomplice.
An eyewitness recalling seeing the suspect exiting and entering the car but he could only recall that the vehicle had a PMM number plate.
Detectives believe that the shooting was a hit and as of late yesterday, they were still trying to connect the dots.
Five spent shells were recovered from the scene.
Herbert’s reputed wife, Roshana Andrews, said that she was at the stall when her partner was shot.
“We were going to the mall and then the rain came down, so I was inside and he (Keron) was outside fixing the tent so that I won’t get wet,” the devastated woman recalled while adding that she heard the explosions but thought someone was lighting squibs.
“A while later I heard the man next door said Keron get shoot and I run out and see he (Keron) on the ground and I scramble he and we put he in a car.”
According to her, she knew of no one who would have wanted to kill her partner, who was once charged in connection with a double-murder.
“He is a nice person. He has a lot of friends and no enemies,” the mother of Herbert’s five-month-old baby said.
Meanwhile, the dead man’s father, Kenneth Herbert explained that he was at work when he received a phone call that his son had been shot.
“I rushed to the hospital and I see my son in the emergency room.”
The man said that he is at a loss as to why someone would want to kill his son, who is nothing but “a ‘nice person’ with reputable friends”
He stated that his son had been selling phone cards, phone chargers and cosmetics at the stall since his mother handed over the place to him about three years ago and was never involved in any “wrong doings,” other than traffic offences.
In October, 2010, Herbert, a former member of the Guyana Defence Force and an accomplice, Rawle Newton were charged with murdering two gold miners at Bartica.
The allegation is that Herbert, between September 4 and 5, murdered Jainarine Raghubar and Ramdeo Deonarine. The victims were found murdered in a house at Bartica.
A quantity of gold and money was also stolen from the house. The booty is said to have included $25 million stashed in a suitcase, some 100 ounces of raw gold, a quantity of jewellery, a large diamond worth at least $15 million and two firearms.
Herbert was not convicted for the offence.
