– Riddim Squad join them as well
Randolph Wagner netted thrice as Western Tigers made it to the semi-final round of the 5th Annual GFA/Banks Beer Knockout Cup after thrashing former champions Sunburst Camptown 4-1 on Saturday, at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.
Wagner scored in the 30th, 62nd and 91st minutes, while Darren Benjamin’s 12th minute strike had given them the early lead in the match. Jahaal Greaves 73rd minute effort was the lone response for Sunburst Camptown.
They piloted Rhythm Squad to the semi-finals stage. (from left), Kesta Joseph, Teon Jones, Sceyon Hope and Sheldon Hope.
They will now oppose Berbice heavyweight New Amsterdam United in the semi-final round at the same venue on Tuesday.
Tigers gained the early ascendancy through Benjamin, who eased past one defender inside the penalty area, before firing past the goalkeeper and into the goal.
Playing with the sort of confidence that typified the club’s performance in the 80’s and a period in the 90’s, the Tigers continued to torment Camptown’s backline and Wagner entered the scoresheet next with a diving header following a cross from Rensford Coleridge which gave them a 2-0 advantage.
The half came with the scores unchanged as Tigers went to the half in a comfortable position.
The resumption bought no respite for Camptown as Wagner and company continued where they left off as they time and again rattled their opponents defence with some threatening forays, before Wagner got his second seventeen minutes into the period, reaching on to the end of a through pass from the skilful Dwayne Ali, the result of a counter attack, to hammer past the hapless keeper.
Greaves pulled one back for Sunburst Camptown after being credited with the goal which came as a result of a deflection following a fierce strike from him that wrong-footed the goalkeeper, before settling in the back of the goal.
However, the Tigers ensured that there will be no late rally as Wagner returned one minute in injury time to complete his hat-trick, booting into the left corner from a pinpoint pass to seal the win and a spot in the semis.
Also making the semi-finals was Riddim Squad, who hammered Beacons 5-0 thanks to a brace from Sheldon Hope, who registered his goals in the 22nd and 75th minutes, while Teon Jones, Kester Joseph and Sceyon Hope completed their tally in the 30th, 47th and 77th minutes respectively.
Riddim Squad will now go up against Santos FC also on Tuesday, at the same venue.
Two million dollars and the championship trophy is up for grabs for the winning team, while the second, third and fourth place finishers take home $1 million, $500,000 and $250,000 respectively along with trophies.
