Godfrey Hercules was having a good time on Christmas Eve Night, forgetting that there was a prison sentence hanging over his head.
But when the police showed up, his long rope came to an end.
You see Hercules had been on the run for almost a year, having been sentenced to three years for stabbing another man, Eric Corbin, during a dancehall brawl two years ago.
From the look of things, Hercules is a party man and it is at these parties that his troubles occur.
It all started at a party two years ago, November 30 to be precise, when Hercules and his girlfriend and her sister attended a party at Nimses, West Bank Demerara.
There a man was making unwelcomed advances towards his sister-in-law, and Hercules’s girlfriend intervened.
She told the man, “Y’all must bring y’all women with y’all.’’
With that, a heated argument ensued. This escalated to a fight with Hercules at the centre of things.
It ended with one Eric Corbin suffering several stabs, which were suspected to have been inflicted by Hercules.
The assailant was arrested and subsequently charged with felonious wounding.
Kaieteur News understands that Hercules, of Long Pond, Sister’s Village, West Bank Demerara, attended court on a few occasions and when he saw the way the matter was heading and that he was likely to be imprisoned, he disappeared.
The Magistrate nevertheless found him guilty and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment in his absence.
Hercules remained at large, seeking safe haven in the interior for several months.
But the lure of seeing his girlfriend was too much for him, and “he tek a chance and come out de bush, thinking that people gon forget.”
On Thursday night, he was hanging out with his girlfriend at Good Intent, West Bank Demerara. As the two were about to leave for home, Hercules’ freedom came to an abrupt end.
To this day no one knows who alerted the police, but they showed up with a clear purpose, and that was to arrest Hercules and put him where he belongs.
“He see police coming and like he realize that is he they coming for, so he start to run. De police buss a shot and he jump in a drain. But dem man end up catching he,” an eyewitness told this newspaper.
The eyewitness said that Hercules questioned the police why they were arresting him since he had no problem with them.
The ranks told him he was wanted and promptly took him away.
“If he didn’t have no problem with the police, why he run?” the eyewitness questioned.
Kaieteur News understands that apart from the three-year sentence that is facing Hercules, he is likely to appear again before the court to answer charges stemming from a physical assault on his mother-in-law who suffered a broken hand as a result.
