More than a month has passed and ex-prisoner Selwyn Atwell is yet to receive justice after he was allegedly beaten by a group of prison officials and an orderly.
Atwell has alleged that he was brutally abused at the hands of some prison officials while he was incarcerated at the Georgetown Prisons for six months.
The Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt resident stated that he has not received word from the prison pertaining to the beating and is looking to take legal action against his alleged perpetrators.
Atwell was released from the prison after his case of domestic violence was dismissed against him.
“More than a month passed and I still haven’t heard anything from the prison. But I’m not prepared to let the matter go. I need justice because I was wrongfully beaten,” he said.
He claimed that he was beaten to his head and about his body with cutlasses fashioned from bed rails. He said the incident occurred after a Matron accused him of causing trouble with another prisoner, who was cussing him out at his bedside.
However, Director of Prisons, Carl Graham, has denied Atwell’s allegation, indicating that the man had told officials that he was beaten by fellow prisoners and not prison officers.
He stressed that Atwell’s case may very well be one of retaliation since Atwell was fingered in the beating of another prisoner. Graham said the prisoners might have retaliated.
“It is very unlikely that officers would beat a prisoner in such a manner,” he had said.
Nevertheless, he stated that the orderly who was accused of being the ring leader of the beating was placed in confinement, pending adjudication.
Three-quarter of the tissues in one of Atwell’s eyes is damaged, rendering him partially impaired.
