Grove Hi Tech face Pouderoyen; Den Amstel tackle Mahaica
Den Amstel Football Club and Mahaica Determinators will battle in the first
quarter final match of the second Stag Super XVI knockout tournament today at the Farm Community Centre ground, East Bank Demerara after they were the final two teams to qualify following wins on Wednesday evening at the Den Amstel ground, West Coast Demerara.
Today’s feature match and the second quarter final will see defending champions Grove Hi Tech facing off with Pouderoyen of West Demerara in what is anticipated to be a humdinger of a battle, the respective winners will earn semi final slots on December 29th.
The final two quarter final matches are set for tomorrow at the Golden Grove ground, East Coast Demerara where East Coast teams Victoria Kings and Ann’s Grove will throw down the gauntlet to West Demerara’s pride, Uitvlugt and Beavers respectively in two potentially bruising encounters.
On Wednesday night on the West Side, home team Den Amstel needled Agricola Red Triangle, while Determinators brushed aside Kuru Kururu Warriors 3-0 as they both moved one place closer to the top prize of 1.5 million dollars compliments of Stag Beer.
The main event produced even exchanges with Agricola’s only lapse costing them the game in the 20th minute. One of the Assistant Referees had raised his flag for an offside but the Referee overruled that decision.
When Agricola’s goalie Shemroy Kendall in the meanwhile had spotted the ball for a kick but on seeing that the referee had overruled his assistant, Den Amstel’s Gavin Graham ran on to the ball and kicked same into the back of the nets which promptly drew the referee’s whistle and signal to the middle confirming that it was a goal.
This decision infuriated the Agricola team which protested but had to accept the decision reluctantly so. Neither team were able to find the back of the nets as the game ended 1-0 in favour of the home team.
The Linden Soesdyke Highway based Kuru Kururu Warriors almost produced a flawless first half in their clash with the East Demerara based Mahaica Determinators, but the latter had other ideas as they nailed their first goal in the 40th minute, it was the first of a double for Quincy Holder.
The Warriors, fielding a young side tried their best to match strides with the Determinators but found themselves two goals down in the first minute of the second half, Samuel Charles inking his name on the score sheet.
Sixty-seven minutes on, it was done and dusted for Mahaica, Holder netting his second of the match and Mahaica’s third to seal a comfortable win while securing their quarter-final date with Den Amstel today at Farm from 18:00hrs.
The main event today between Grove Hi Tech and Pouderoyen will see the home team being led by Sherman Doris, Lloyd Matthews, Akeem James, Orson Francois, Moses Fraser, Mervin Squires and Seon Simpson who starred between the uprights in their grueling penalty kicks win over Golden Stars on Tuesday night last.
Pouderoyen, which also won via penalty kicks against Soesdyke Falcons, will look to Adrian Giddings, Clement Brown, Delon Josiah, Marvin Griffith, Glenville Hazel and Cleveland Walcott.
In tomorrow’s matches, Victoria Kings, coming off a 1-0 win over Stewartville will hope to go a step further in their match-up with Uitvlugt who were also 1-0 winners over BV Triumph United. The Kings will bank on the services of their goal scorer Alden Lawrence, Calvin De Souza, Winston Pompey, Aubrey Gibson, Desmond Granada, Dion Solomon, Orwin Bishop and Ron Collins among others.
Seon Bobb, scorer of Uitvlugt’s lone goal, will again lead their quest for a win with assistance from David Blake, Keion Duke, Sherland Grainger, Alex Moore, Montel Dainty, Jamal Petty, Lennox Torrington and Owen McGarrell.
Ann’s Grove, beaten finalists in the inaugural final last year by Grove Hi Tech will be coming strong following their 2-1 win over Eagles of West Demerara. Jermain Rogers and Shafeer Sainicher netted in that win and will again lead along with Quincy Barry, Kevon Barry, Jermain Clark, Levon Adams and Travis Allen.
Beavers, recording the largest margin of victory so far, 6-1 against Herstelling Raiders, will start afresh against Ann’s Grove and aim for that high level of finishing again. Junior Wiltshire will be going after more goals following his brace in that win which was the first of the competition.
He will look to the likes of Junior Withrite, Kevin D’Andrade, Gavin Sheckle, Delroy Hinds and Jumaal Holder. Unfortunately, Esan Nelson who had netted a hat-trick, will have to sit out this match after he was red carded after being booked twice.
