Dear Editor,
Permit me please to address a nationwide stigma that is clearly affecting the LGBT people of Guyana.
Please note that this article is opinionated only by me and may not necessarily be viewed the same by all despite their sexuality.
The LGBT people of Guyana is one of the most unique set of people this country has. I adore their bravery, their patience and long-suffering with the daily pangs of the battle against homophobic people.
They must be applauded for their stand wanting to be themselves and making themselves happy in a society that is prevalent of homophobia.
But sadly, they’re most likely being taken for granted.
Their lifestyle has become one of the most talked about thing in the country and not in a reputable way.
I find it rather offensive than funny to use the lifestyle of LGBT persons as a base of entertainment in the comedy industry. LGBT people have less privilege in the society.
They’re discriminated in their work places, on the streets, when shopping, traveling in public transportation and the list goes on. Why?
Well, because they’re different. They choose to love the same sex. What people need to know about them is that they are just as educated and embodied with special talents and skills as the “normal” people.
They’re the most intelligent people I’ve come across and most loving persons. They don’t speak hate but embraces love and tolerance. Why should we want to do them wrong? What wrong have they done to us? Why can’t we keep our opinion(s) about them they same they keep their opinion(s) about us? Another thing the society fails to realize is that not only those at the “Cathedral, King St.” consist of the LGBT people of Guyana. There are many “closet” LGBT people in Guyana. Most of them choose to hide their sexuality because of our homophobic nation.
Spoiler alert but the homophobic people judge others but they too may have a LGBT person “in the closet” at home. It may be your brother, your sister even your husband or wife so please don’t yell discriminatory slur against them.
The society should start putting themselves in the places of these people and try to see if they can live through the daily pangs and distresses. They should start accepting these people as a global change. I patiently await the time when SASOD and the LGBT community of Guyana come to their goal of freeing LGBT in Guyana.
