Beacon clip Flamingo’s wings; Camptown overcome Northern Rangers in thrillers
Beacon FC and Flamingo FC played to a goalless first half but made amends during the second session, each scoring one goal apiece to push their game into extra time and consequently penalty kicks where the former team prevailed 4-1, when the action resumed in the GFA/Banks Beer Cup Football tournament at the Georgetown Football Club Ground last Wednesday evening.
During regulation time, Christian Garraway netted from the penalty spot for Beacons in the 70th minute, while Sheldon Gourick’s 83rd minute success ensured that the Flamingoes stayed in contention.
Thereafter, both teams then tried valiantly to seize the initiative but at the end of that period and subsequently extra time, neither could find the magical goal to surge ahead and the game was eventually decided on penalty kicks where Garraway featured once again, breaching the opposition’s goal for Beacons FC to eventually prevail 4-1.
One game later, Sunburst Camptown FC cemented its place in the next round with a decisive 2 nil victory over Northern Rangers following goals from Rishawn Sandiford on the stroke of half time and Anthony Sancho during the second half period.
Sandiford’s success came off a free kick just outside the 18 yards box and his swirling kick reduced the opposition’s goalie to a mere spectator as the ball sped past him to rest in the network.
Northern Rangers received the perfect opportunity to resort the situation to equilibrium when Desmond McKenzie received a pass that landed plumb on his right foot with no one, not even the goalkeeper, in his way. He swiveled and then to the horror of the spectators and his team mates, the striker nonchalantly approached the task and totally missed the ball. That faux pas seemed to have become an epidemic when McKenzie was given a chance to redeem himself with another simple offering and as if on cue, botched the chance.
It certainly did not help Northern Rangers’ morale when Orandel Squires received a caution after a dangerous tackle that left his opponent spread-eagled on the turf. As the match dwindled, Camptown turned up the heat and the opposition must have welcomed the rains that sprinkled down simultaneously and sent spectators scampering for cover.
Unfortunately, Camptown did not conform to such logics and intensified its aggression to the point that Anthony Sancho’s contribution came just around that time.
Camptown now play Western Tigers when activities resume tonight. (Michael Benjamin)
