President of the Essequibo/ Pomeroon Football Association, Wesley Haynes giving an update on the current status of football on the Essequibo Coast has revealed that the sport was dormant on the Essequibo Coast until members of the Guyana Football Federation paid a visit to the Region in May of 2013. The outcome of that meeting resulted in the formation of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) which further saw Mr. Walter Joseph been elected as Chairman of that body.
Joseph initially regrouped some of the old persons that were involved in football over the years and from then the game became active again. However, on the 17, of October, 2015 an election was done whereby the Essequibo /Pomeroon Football Association (ECPFA) Wesley Compton Haynes was elected president, Maxine Stewart Vice President, Jennifer Jeffrey Secretary, Travis Bowen Assistant Secretary/Treasurer, Second Vice President Ms. Tucker of Supenaam and Kenesha Coates Treasurer.
Haynes believes that with the current working group and the help of the GFF, football will definitely rise to the next level. Haynes said that it is his greatest wish to sit and see top level football playing in Essequibo. Haynes contended that it will make him happy.
Meanwhile, in recent matches played at the Mainstay Lake Community playfield saw a quality evening of football played between Dartmouth Dominators and Mainstay Cold Star. The first half of the match produced exciting and excellent performances from Randy DeYounge and Collins DeYounge both of Mainstay Cold Star and Darius Garraway of Dominators, however no goals were scored in that half.
The second half saw both teams missing numerous chances, but it was Mainstay in the 61st minute that picked up a goal lead to come out winners over the Dominators. (Yannason Duncan)
