The Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) of New Amsterdam Berbice is at it again. This time the club will be hitting the ground running, as it continues to set the pace. The club in recognition of Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary will be staging a cycle race, which will be the first for the New Year.
The event, which is a 40-mile affair, is open to all cyclists countrywide and is set to pedal off on Sunday 3rd January on the Corentyne highway at 10:00 hrs. There will be a number of categories on show with the main party set to pedal off from in front of the Lewisons’ Auto Parts, cycle and General Store at Rose Hall Town, proceed to NO51 Police Station and back to the starting point.
A number of lucrative prizes put together by a number of business entities and personalities in Berbice are up for grabs.
Prizes will be awarded to the first six finishers, first three juniors and the first three club cyclists. There will also be 10 prime point prizes up for grabs.
Among the donors are Mark and Neil Lewis of Lewisons’ Auto Parts, cycle and General Store of Rose Hall Town, Peter Lewis of Peter Lewis Construction, overseas based Guyanese Kenrick Taylor of Canada, Sherwin Photo Works among others.
On Tuesday main Sponsor Neal Lewis of the Lewis store presented a cheque for a hefty sum to organizer Randolph Roberts at their business entity at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice.
Officials of the Government are expected to be on hand to start the race and help with the distribution of prizes.
Cyclists are reminded that they must participate in their club colours.
Interested participants are asked to get in contact with coordinator Randolph Roberts.
Meanwhile, young and upcoming cyclist, 14 year old Zamar Khan, a new entrant to the club was the recipient of a new racing cycle compliments of businessman Steve Edwards. Khan who showed keen interest in the sport was without a proper cycle.
Roberts saw the interest of the young rider and his struggles and decided to do something to assist and made some contacts and not long after got some positive response.
One such was from Mr. Edwards who stated that he was always impressed with the work ethics of Roberts and the number of youngsters he has brought to the fold, sometime amidst trying circumstances. (Samuel Whyte)
