There will be no Christmas for a resident of South Vryheid’s Lust after he was remanded to prison after making an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown’s Magistrates’ Court on an illegal gun and ammunition charge.
Edward McCollin, 27, of Lot 67 South Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, is accused of having a .22 revolver in his possession, when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
It was also alleged that he had 19 live rounds of .22 ammunition in his possession.
To these two charges, McCollin pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison until January 18.
The Magistrate remanded him to prison after refusing his pleas for bail.
McCollin, who was not represented by an attorney, made his own application for bail. He stated that he was beaten and knocked unconscious by police ranks, while talking with some females at August Beverages.
He stated that the gun and matching ammunitions were not in his possession.
However, Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, told the Court that ranks on patrol saw McCollin at August Beverages with the firearm. Jones said that while the police were approaching the defendant he began conversing with the females.
According to the Prosecutor, McCollin told the lawmen that he is currently a member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF). Despite his claims, the ranks still conducted the search and found the illegal gun and ammunition in his possession.
Jones further related that instead of cooperating, the defendant became aggressive and attacked the police. He related that the police resorted to force and he was knocked out in the process.
He also noted the McCollin was charged before for a similar offence.
