A female security guard attached to Massey Security was killed yesterday after a speeding motorcar collided with a minibus in which she was a passenger, on the Goedverwagting Public Road, East Coast Demerara. Dead is Patricia Mitchell of Mahaica, who is said to be in her 40’s.
The accident reportedly occurred around 15:00hrs.
According to reports, Mitchell received severe head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Kaieteur News understands that the route 44 minibus in which Mitchell was travelling had about 11 other passengers. When tragedy struck the bus was making its way to Georgetown.
Reshawna Gordon, who was also a passenger in the minibus, said that the vehicle was hit from behind by the car.
Speaking with Kaieteur News at the GPHC, she stated that as a result of the impact, the bus driver, Cleveland Sam lost control of the vehicle, resulting in it toppling several times on the roadway.
Some of the injured have been identified as the bus driver, who is a father of four, of Mahaica and two passengers, Volessa Adams, 18, of Jonestown, Mahaica and Russelle Gordon, 30, a mother of two of Beterverwagting. They were all rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
Scores of family members flocked the entrance of the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit anxiously awaiting word on the conditions of their loved ones. However, they were all barred from entering by a security guard, who insisted that he was following doctors’ instructions.
According to Barbara Sam, the mother of the bus driver, her son received several injuries to both hands.
Russelle Gordon’s aunt, Collette Gordon said that she was in Bounty Supermarket on Water Street, when her niece called to inform her about the accident.
Up to press time the injured were receiving treatment and there were no updates on their conditions.
