One year after he was charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, a Police Sergeant who was described as a ‘Wedding House Bad Man’ is now free to resume his career in crime fighting.
This was after Magistrate Sueanna Lovell dismissed the case against Sergeant Sohan Ramdat yesterday at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court following a no case submission by his attorney Sandil Kissoon.
Ramdat was charged on July 10, last year, after he was allegedly caught brandishing an illegal weapon at a wedding house at Cane Grove, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
He had pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison on his first court appearance. He subsequently secured pre-trial liberty from the High Court.
The prosecution was trying to prove that an intoxicated Ramdat brandished the weapon at the wedding house causing patrons to become afraid. This led to them contacting the police. A police patrol responded and carried out a search on Ramdat and found the weapon.
The Sergeant who was promoted a few weeks prior by the then outgoing commissioner of police Leroy Brumell was promptly placed under close arrest.
The prosecution called 14 witnesses during the trial and, according to Attorney at Law Kissoon, still did not present a case for the Sergeant to answer.
In the end the Magistrate agreed with the Defence and dismissed the case against the Cop, who was stationed on the East Coast of Demerara.
An elated Sergeant Ramdat smiled and walked out of the courtroom eager to have his interdiction lifted so that he can resume his career as a lawman.
