It really does not require a rocket scientist to unearth the current motive of the opposition leader. Having been booted out of office in the last election by the APNU+AFC coalition for the poor handling of the nation’s affairs, the PPP has been busy trying to revise history to fool the people into believing that Guyana was firmly on a path to growth and development when the PPP left office.
Adrift on a sea of moral confusion, Jagdeo now finds himself in a serious bind with his recent statement that the contract to lease and to eventual sell a piece of land at Thomas Lands to his friend and convicted felon Ed Ahmad was cancelled. It is a blatant lie.
Jagdeo has not only criticized almost every achievement of the new government, including its handling of the border dispute, the clean-up of Georgetown, the $50,000 Christmas bonus to public servants and efforts to turn GUYSUCO around, but he and his MPs continue to mock the government. He claims that the government has not really done anything to transform the fundamentals of the economy to prevent the debt from rising.
One has to assume that Jagdeo was in a self-induced comatose state for the last eight months, and has missed all the accomplishments of this government. For many in the PPP, Jagdeo has not emerged as the Knight in Shining Armor who can save the party. Without any core philosophical understanding, he does not speak the language of many in the party whom he has alienated and who claimed that he is the right person to lead them.
They are betrayed by his confounded statements and do not see him as the messiah they have long waited for. Perhaps, Jagdeo lives in a parallel universe because the people have witnessed the heroic efforts of the government to correct the inherited ills of the PPP administration and to put the country on the path to sustained development.
These achievements are manifested in the reduction of the debt-to-GDP ratio, the creation of jobs, improved productivity of the labor force, the reduction of imports, enhanced investor confidence, and the development of the health and education sectors. The government is committed to protecting the poor and the most vulnerable in society through increased public spending on critical social services.
For those who are not aware, the PPP Government had pursued some reckless economic policies resulting in the ballooning of the national debt to 65 percent of GDP by the time it was defeated in May. During the Jagdeo/Ramotar era, Guyana was ranked as the second most corrupt country in the hemisphere after Haiti.
The new government has corrected the structural flaws in the economy and has laid the necessary foundation for growth and development to benefit all Guyanese. It has also made tremendous efforts in getting investments in the tourism, energy and the agriculture sectors. These investments mean more jobs and increased earnings for the country. They are the results of a well-designed and strategically executed economic policy by the government.
Today, Guyana has achieved a high esteem in the international arena, thanks to the new government.
In politics, good leadership matters but Jagdeo has poor leadership skills. He has not initiated any policies and has not demonstrated the ability to think of the common good. He is dogged by his corrupt practices, disunity, negativity, distortions of the truth and perceptions of racism which the PPP can ill-afford if it wants to regain power.
Jagdeo cannot be trusted and his actions have turned the PPP into a public circus. He should sort out his party’s lingering mess and focus on representing the interests of the people and not criticize for the sake of criticism.
