Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ordered a taxi driver to post bail in the sum of $150,000 after he was accused of swindling a woman of over $2M in articles, when he appeared yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that during the months of October and November, Ravindra Persaud, 35, of Lot 474 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara was solely entrusted with 154 buckets of nails, 220 cases of Charmin toilet paper, 51 pieces of bed sheet sets among other items carrying a total of $2,017,500 by Yazmine Deonauth, to sell and return the proceeds to her. But instead, Persaud allegedly converted the items to his own use and benefit.
An unrepresented Persaud pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail after Police Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones did not oppose the request. However, Jones informed the court that the defendant admitted to stealing the items.
When given a chance to explain his side of the story, Persaud told the Magistrate that he had already repaid the complainant for the items. He stated that since the incident he was released on station bail and has been reporting to the police periodically.
The complainant denied ever receiving compensation for the items mentioned in the charge. She said that she gave the items to the defendant to sell and never saw him again until she reported the matter to the police.
Persaud will make his next court appearance on January 3, before Magistrate Judy Latchman. He was also ordered to report to the police.
