“I consider it an honor to serve and protect the citizens of this country of ours and while
awards are wonderful to receive, just knowing that you have helped someone in whatever way is truly rewarding enough.”
Detective Sergeant Rodwell Sarrabo had just been adjudged the Best Detective for 2015 at the Criminal Investigations Department, C.I.D Headquarters Christmas Luncheon and Awards Ceremony yesterday.
His awards included $225,000 cash, accompanied by a trophy and other accolades handed over to him by Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud DSM.
This is in addition to him being awarded $125,000 on the Tactical Service Square for individual performance in 2015.
Serving in the force for ten years with his eyes on the prize to one day becoming Police Commissioner, Sarrabo, 30, was one of several ranks awarded for their contribution to the Force’s Crime Fighting and Solving Department.
“I am one of those fortunate people who go home knowing that I make a difference in my country just by being a police officer,” the father of three said, fighting emotions.
After ten years of service to the Guyana Police Force he expressed gratitude for the recognition and noted that “like every police,” winning and standing in front of many people accepting an award recognizing his qualities and achievements is a fulfillment of his dreams.
He noted, that while he is the one receiving the award it was more of a team effort with special mention of the other ranks of the “Major Crimes Investigation Unit”, MCIU, who played `integral roles investigating and solving all of the high profile crimes in the country.
“Together we have worked as a unit; we demonstrated professionalism and potential to work under any circumstances. We focused on teamwork and equally contributed our best in achieving goals that benefited the entire force and the country without looking forward for a reward. We demonstrated courage when taking high risks. Our success was
based on cooperation.”
The Best Detective of the year said that every day police ranks go to work knowing that they have a chance of not going back home alive. “You may call it bravery, but we see it as commitment, dedication, loyalty and the love we have for our job and serving the people of this great country.”
Among the many persons that the detective offered gratitude to was Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, whom he thanked for creating a climate in which people are motivated to excel and would work hard to contribute their best. “I assure you that I will do my best to justify your trust and continue to contribute to the Guyana Police Force in doing what I know to do best and that is, serving and protecting the people of this great country.”
