“Shariff blow good breeze on hay you, boy”, was the talk all around as Plum Plum of the
late Mohammed “Nakooo” Shariff Racing Stable could not have chosen a better day to score its biggest win since arriving in Guyana as the racehorse romped away with the feature event at the Guyana Cup Rematch Horses race meet. It was a perfect win in memory of its late owner who passed away a few days ago leaving behind a solid legacy in the horseracing circle.
The event was organized by the Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and Racing Stable in collaboration with the Port Mourant Turf Club and held on Sunday last at the Port Mourant Turf Club, Corentyne Berbice.
Those who believe in superstition were asking the question was it something superstitious or just a series of coincidences that played out. To begin with the rain chose to fall on that day flooding the track. However, the track dried out allowing the event to come off in front of a sizeable crowd.
However, the talk was on the performance of Plum Plum running in the feature event. The fact that the handlers of that stable still chose to participate in the event one day after his funeral was commendable. Over a dozen of his animals were in preparation. In the end it came down to Plum Plum alone being taken to the track.
With Jockey Colin Ross riding on his wedding anniversary the animal classified D3 and lower with a weight of 108 pounds was out among the front runners early. With some amount of jostling and changes in position among the front runners the event went at a blistering pace despite the conditions. With pre-race favourites CP Got Even and Just Call Me
Boss in the running it was still anyone’s race. CP Got Even known for its late surge and strong finish making up tremendous ground, a close finish was in the making. However, Plum Plum, urged by Ross, held its pace to come out the winner ahead of the fast finishing CP Got Even to bring some joy and happiness to the Shariff connections who before were in a somber mood.
The win was worth $1.2M and the Banks DIH Trophy as Keep on Swinging and Lady Budapest rounded out the placings.
Storm Bird of the Inshan Bacchus stable with Jamaican Brian Blake in the saddle was back to top form as it stormed to front early and whipped the field for a gate to pole victory in the E3 1000M event to take home the $800,000 money and trophy ahead of Right to Rule, Release the Beast and Red and Lovely.
Red Rocket of the Jumbo Jet stable with Rad Ramnauth showed good form in winning the 1000M event for H2 and Two year old West Indies bred horses from Weekend Surprise, Mary Ann and She So Special. The win was worth $400,000 and trophy.
The Girl Is Mine of the Ramsaywack Stable with Premchandra on board made sure that the two year old Guyana Bred 1000M event was hers as she romp home with the $300,000 money and trophy as Fire ball, She Is In Control and Back Track trailed in her wake.
Little of the Gopaul Singh stable with Ross again on the mount came big in winning the J1
and lower 1000M race, burning De Gump, Liquid Lion and Red Jet in the process.
Massaquita Dr with Kevin Paul riding of the Crawford stable won the K and lower race. The others that placed were Amazon Warrior, Plane Land and Blue Lightning.
The top jockey on show was Colin Ross riding on his wedding anniversary. The Jumbo Jet stable took away the top stable award.
They all received incentives compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall of Bourda Market. Over 60 horses participated in the event which had in excess of $10M up for the taking. (Samuel Whyte)
