A 55-year-old carpenter will be spending Christmas behind bars after he was remanded to prison by the Chief Magistrate on two charges of break and enter and larceny, and a charge of escaping from lawful custody.
Mark Mc Calman of Lot 12 Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara is accused of breaking into Action Tyre Outlet between December 1 and 7. He allegedly stole 20 pounds of construction nails, one roll of chain link fencing among other items to the value of $91,200.
It was further alleged that between December 16 and 17, Mc Calman broke into the Outlet again and stole six sheets of galvanized mesh valued at $36,000. These incidents allegedly occurred at Grove.
It is also alleged that on December 17, at Grove Police Station, McCalman escaped from the lawful custody of Special Constable John Rawlins, while pending a charge of break and enter and larceny.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges and will return to court on January 11. This matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones objected to the defendant being granted pre-trial liberty on the ground that he admitted to stealing the items. According to the Prosecutor, eyewitnesses saw the man removing the items.
However, Mc Calman told Magistrate Ann McLennan that he did not steal the articles neither did he escape from the Police Station. He claimed that an officer assaulted him and he ran away. He stressed that he did not exit the door.
The defendant alleged that the officer, who assaulted him, told him that he would “put an escape charge on him.”
