– released on $10,000 bail
The 28-year-old man, who had accused a Police Constable attached to the Timehri Police Station of raping him, was yesterday brought before a City Magistrate, after being accused of providing false information to the police.
The man, Stephan Phillips, of Bath Settlement, Berbice is accused of providing false information to Police Lance Corporal, Marlon Rodney, on October 22, last, at the Brickdam Police Station. The information he provided to the officer allegedly stated that he was raped by Police Constable, Shawn Beharry.
According to reports, Philips was arrested on a break and enter offence in October. While in Police custody waiting to be taken to the Providence Magistrate’s Court, he alleged that he was asked by the Police Constable to perform ‘deep throat’ (fellatio) and to engage in anal sex.
Phillips had claimed that the police had told him if he had engaged in the acts, all charges would be dropped against him. Phillips had claimed that he had blood on his pants to prove his story.
However, several of the man’s neighbours almost everyone said that he fabricated the story. The neighbours had said that when Phillips wants money he would irritate his pile (swollen blood vessels in or around the anus and rectum) and go around the community begging for money to go to the hospital.
But according to residents, instead of going for medical treatment he would usually smoke out the money.
Police Corporal, Adunni Inniss, objected to the defendant being granted bail after pointing out that he was arrested and charged before for break and enter and larceny. She also pointed to the seriousness and nature of the offence.
However, the Prosecutor’s objections were overruled by the Magistrate, who set bail in the sum of $10,000.
Devon Wade, who represented the defendant, told the court that his client has no pending or previous matters.
Phillips will return to court on January 4, for the commencement of a trial.
