… Promises to aid Police Force in solving crime
To better aid the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in its mission to reduce crime and minimise road fatalities, representatives of German Company called “UTSCH” are currently working on a proposal for the implementation of “special” vehicle registration plates.
When completed, the proposal will be sent to Government.
This was revealed at a press conference which was hosted by the Guyana National Road Safety Council (GNRSC) and the GPF at the Traffic Headquarters last week.
Bringing this revelation to light was the National Coordinator of Community Policing Groups (CPGs) Dennis Pompey, in the presence of the Crime Chief Dion Moore, GNRSC’s Executive Member Shahab Hack and other stakeholder representatives of several organisations such as the Red Cross Society.
Pompey stated that if successfully implemented, UTSCH’s product would aid the GPF tremendously since it would not only assist in reducing traffic misdemeanours but also in solving crimes such as tax evasion and pinpointing persons of interests.
The idea came about after representatives of UTSCH – which company specialises in the manufacture of these plates – visited Guyana last month. The GNRSC had been pushing for the upgrade for the past couple of years after noticing it in other countries, Pompey stated.
“…This would help assist the police track down vehicles that would be involved in accidents like hit and run and tracking people who may be owing tickets, or pinpointing persons who don’t pay their income taxes,” Pompey said.
On the question of the existence of street side registration repairmen, if the green light is given, Pompey said that once government responds in the GPF’s favour, these entities will cease to exist because of the advanced technological attributes that would be added to the plates such as Global Positioning Tracker (GPS), inscriptions of various identification numbers along with what other recommendations government makes.
When contacted, Minister of National Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, said that UTSCH’s representatives are currently working on the proposal and the government was impressed by UTSCH’s demonstration. However he could not comment further since the proposal is yet to be received.
Traffic Chief Moore on Friday commented that the upgrade would be a game changer since the current system is an open one; uncontrolled, where persons can easily tamper with but with the new tech, there will be better monitoring and tampering would be harder to commit since attempts would cause destruction to the plate.
A piece of legislation, he said, would also be set in motion so that tinkerers would be criminalised.
