Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to you with mixed emotions that is about a situation about which I am angry, embarrassed and disgusted. I am specifically talking here about how the Republic Bank is treating pensioners. They have a policy stating that after one would have retired, they are not entitled to access any more loans from the bank. In my opinion this is a very sick and disgusting attitude by the bank. Other pensioners also verbally express these same sentiments
I would also like to state that Republic Bank (and I hope the other banks are not indulging in this weird behavior also) of making their customers (pensioners in this case) feel rejected and discarded. Why I am saying so is because over the years while the pensioners were working for their salaries and in some cases, other financial resources went into this very bank to help boost their financial status and capability generally speaking. I have given over 33.5 years to public and private service in this country, Guyana. Many pensioners like myself have done the same or more but are also being disregarded and disrespected now. The present government after announcing the one off package for public servants, also disregard pensioners by leaving them out. I am also in the process of writing a letter to them as the Minister of Finance’s secretary told me the Minister is busy and I could write about this seeing that I cannot speak to him now.
In referring again to the issue of denial of bank loans to pensioners, I told a bank teller, who I was discussing this issue with, that whenever they have bank meetings these types of behavior by the administrative staff should be ventilated by the staff members. Editor, I hope the administrative staff of the bank will see this letter and make some reforms or adjustments in relation to these harsh policies to ease the pressure financially on pensioners by releasing loans to them. Pensioners need the financial assistance to help them pay bills and satisfy their needs generally. Because after you would have retired you still need financial and other assistance to help you to survive and take care of your children (whom may not all be grown and in many instances pensioners have to take care of their grandchildren, other relatives or elderly parents.
