Kennard says race meet was started by his father in the 1930s
Demerara Distillers Limited’s (DDL) Ivanoff Brand Manger Maria Munroe yesterday handed over the Trophy and cheque to President of the Kennard Memorial Turf Club at Bush Lot Farm in Corentyne Berbice, Justice
Cecil Kennard for their Boxing Day Horseracing event.
The Diamond based Distillery has been a sponsor for the Christmas meet for 43 years and this year they have given a trophy and cash incentives for the G & Lower and 3 & 4 years maidens event.
Kennard, who received the sponsorship at his office on Brickdam, described DDL’s contribution as ‘substantial’ adding that Berbice Turf Club and DDL enjoys a long and cordial relationship and that he was confident that the ‘marriage’ will continue.
Kennard explained that his father began the Christmas Horserace meet in the 1930’s for the people in the Village who were mainly Rice Farmers, but in recent times the club has been hosting four events every year.
Kennard informed that many Turfites come home for Christmas to attend the Boxing Day meet adding that races are eagerly looked forward to by especially Berbicians.
“DDL has been a sponsor for all four of our races each year. This year it’s under the Ivanoff brand and we will continue our sponsorship in 2016,” Munroe promised.
Munroe is no stranger to sports having represented her Country in Hockey and said last year was the first time she ever attended Horseracing.
“When you go to this event, you can’t help but notice the level off passion the spectators have for the sport. The excitement level is very high and true fans know the names of all the Horses. It is a day of entertainment for the entire family and encourage everyone be at the Kennard Memorial Turf club on Boxing Day,” Munroe said.
“Drink responsible and if you have to get a designated driver do so and have an enjoyable Boxing at the races, especially those from Georgetown who have never experienced the feeling you get from being at this event,” Munroe encouraged. (Sean Devers)
