Residents of Wakenaam are set to benefit from improved ferry services. According to a spokesperson for Transport and Habours Department, (TH&D) improvement in ferry service for Wakenaam started yesterday.
Kaieteur News understands that the increased ferry trips were slated to begin with a M. V Makouria voyage at 17:00 hrs on Sunday and another trip at 04:00 hrs on Monday.
A decision was taken by the Transport Department to allow TH&D vessels to make additional trips to the island, following a visit to Wakenaam by Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson.
Minister Ferguson paid the visit last Friday. During the tour, residents were particularly vocal about what they deemed as substandard service at the Wakenaam stelling. A government ferry would usually ply the route thrice weekly.
However, according to information released on the Government Information Agency Website (GINA) , residents have since emphasised that there was a need to put a proper system in place that would see them benefiting from better service.
They highlighted issues and problems they would have experienced as recent as last week. Amongst the complaints were erratic services, long waits, and unprofessionalism on the part of T&HD staff.
“It’s not fair for us to sit on a ferry for hours, and this is happening very often,” a resident said. The man, a driver by profession, further said that he has eased working due to the ongoing situation. He emphasised that he has no other job. “Nobody wants to turn up and hear the time change or the boat ain’t coming,” another resident chimed in.”
Business persons in particular, complained that the unpredictable schedule severely affects their businesses. They told Minister Ferguson that the alternative of speedboats was too expensive, even for those with small families.
During her visit last Friday, Minister Ferguson was accompanied by the General Manager T&HD, Marcelene Merchant and Traffic Manager of the Department, Stephan Skekel.
