The Rising Sun Turf Club, in collaboration with the Inshan Bacchus Trucking Service, Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and Banks DIH Limited will begin the 2016 racing programme with the staging of the signature 1st of the Year horserace meeting on Sunday January 3rd, 2016 at the Club’s facility, Rising Sun, Arima Park, West Coast Berbice.
The event which is expected to be a signature affair will be staged in lieu of the recent passing of race horse owner, trainer, breeder, importer and promoter, Mohammed “Nankoo” Shariff.
The event will be named the “The Mohammed “Nankoo” Shariff Memorial Horserace Meet.
Seven races are listed on the programme with over $4M in cash trophies and other incentives up for the taking.
With the Rising Sun Turf Club known for creating exciting and highly competitive race meets, the event is designed to bring out the best of the imported and locally bred horses available. Already a large field has indicated their involvement. The feature event will be the Shariff Memorial 1400M classic for animals classified D and lower for a first prize of $700,000 and trophy.
The other races are the E and lower 1400M event for a winning take of 500,000 and trophy.
The G class event has a winners money of $300, 000 and trophy over 1400M.
There is an event for horses classified H2 and lower with the winner set to take home $220,000 and a trophy.
The horses classified J and lower will be racing for a winner’s cheque of $180,000 and trophy over 1100M.
The final two events are for animals classified J and Lower and K and lower respectively. The distances are 1100M and the winner will take home $150,000 and $100,000 dollars and trophies respectively. Race time is 12:30hrs. (Samuel Whyte)
