Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson is not discounting the possibility of Government reintroducing railway service, something that more and more commuters are calling for in light of the huge traffic congestion in Georgetown.
According to the Minister, the concept for such a structure would be brainstormed by next year, 2016, so that a feasibility study can be facilitated.
Ferguson stated that bringing back the railway service is not something that Government has on its agenda at the moment, though it was a good idea.
According to her, the prompting behind the suggestion was a valid one, as the transportation industry has been growing for the past decade.
Regarding the present transportation woes, Ferguson pointed out that there are provisions in the 2016 budget for a secondary road on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD).
According to the Minister, she has recently been engaged in conversations with engineers and one of the things she has discussed is the idea of constructing a commuter railway system, suspended above ground.
Ferguson made it clear that the merits of this project would have to be explored in detailed studies, though it has been implemented in countries around the world.
Ferguson’s comments come amidst the daily frustrations many commuters experience along the city’s thoroughfare and the EBD. With regards to the EBD and the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB), government has already put out a tender for consultants to conduct a feasibility study into a new structure bridging the two banks. Already, foreign and local consultants have bid publicly for the project.
The new project frame work, as set out by the Ministry, will examine the three possible sites for the new bridge, namely Houston, EBD to Versailles WBD or New Hope EBD to Laurentia Catherina, WBD or a site close to the existing bridge structure.
In keeping with the Ministry of Public Infrastructure’s mandate, any proposed bridge design should include a navigational clearance of 100 meters wide with navigational aids, an air draft of 50 meters of vertical clearance, adequate marine collision protection at navigating channels, and an estimated length of 2,250 meters.
