President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Nigel Hinds on Saturday night witnessed the penultimate night of the preliminary round play of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association organized, Malta Supreme Christmas Open basketball championship, where he made a timely donation of an undisclosed sum of money towards the payment of officials in this year’s championship.

The GABF president said he was approached by the association for assistance based on the fact that while major sponsors are Banks DIH through their Malta Supreme brand, there were areas where additional financing was need hence the bid for assistance from the parent body.
Assistant Secretary of the LABA Danica Barker-Chase said the association was grateful for the response by Hinds at the last minute and reminded that the federation had always been always supportive of their needs and plans for the promotion of the sport in Linden and its environs.
Meanwhile, the GBAF boss also took the opportunity to donate two basketballs to the association for use in the championship and made a cash donation of $10,000 to each of the players from Linden who recently played for Guyana against the Antigua and Barbuda All Star team recently.
Those receiving the stipends were Terron Welch, Michael Turner, Dennis Niles, Harold Adams, Keon Cameron and assistant coach Kevin Joseph, which was a promise that an appreciation for the sacrifice made by the players would be shown according to the federation president.
On Saturday night, Retrieve Raiders got the better of Amelia’s Ward Jets 49-46, while there was a walkover win for the Half Mile Bulls.
The game on Wednesday is to see which of the two will top the points table ahead of third placed Victory Valley Royals who also have eight points but have completed their five games and Amelia’s Ward Jets are on seven points, being the teams that have reached the final four after Block 22 Flames and Bankers Trust Falcons were eliminated.
The LABA Executive Committee will meet tonight at the Mackenzie Sports Club Lounge to discuss the completion of the current championship and that meeting is at 19.00hrs.
