The Sceon Beckles custody case is still engaging the attention of the Child Care and Protection Agency, despite some suggestions that the agency is not doing enough to return the child to his mother.
“This is a serious matter of domestic abuse and we are looking at the interest of the children, to ensure that they are safe in whichever environment they are in,” the official said, adding that they are ‘treading softly’ on the issue because of its sensitive nature.
Selman Beckles, a mother of two, is caught in a nasty custody battle with her estranged husband, George Selman.
It is alleged that the mother of two has received threats to her life.
She has filed for divorce and had her spouse served with a restraining order.
But in the midst of constant reports of domestic abuse, a court ordered that the Child Care and Protection Agency hand one of her children over to her spouse.
The order was made based on evidence presented in the court.
“So the agency did not take the child away from her. We reluctantly did what we were told. However, now we are watching over the interest of the children,” the official said, adding that the issue has captured the attention of many non-governmental organizations.
Beckles, who remains in hiding with her other son, yesterday alleged that the death threats have not ceased but have only escalated.
“He is threatening to kill me, my sister and my brother just because he thinks they know where I am. He told them that once he finds me he is going to kill me,” she said.
She stated that she was afraid to put her life and the life of her son in the hands of the police and Ministry.
“The protection order doesn’t protect me…look where I am,” she said.
The protection order has instructed that Selman should not be within 100 feet of Beckles and her children for a period of ten years. He was restrained from harassing her. However, Selman had to be barred by a policeman from assaulting her at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court sometime after the order was issued.
Selman’s lawyer had also stepped down from representing him after allegedly hearing his client utter similar threats.
A senior official at the Ministry of Social Protection had indicated that they had done all they can to assist Beckles and it was now up to her to accept their final offer of help for protection. The source said, “hiding won’t help her…This man has friends and he is very aggressive”.
“I don’t know…I’m still considering what they have proposed,” Beckles said when questioned if she had decided to accept the Ministry’s proposal.
Beckles’ husband is a prison official at the Georgetown Prison. Domestic violence is currently a prevalent issue in Guyana.
