It was the Jamal Butts and company show as New Amsterdam United made an emphatic statement to all and sundry that their campaign for top honours in this year’s Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Banks Beer Knockout Cup will not be derailed easily.
Playing at the No. 5 ground in West Berbice on Saturday, NA United led by a hat-trick from Butts, who netted in the 56th, 70th and 88th minutes, a brace from Keon Williams in the 28th and 33rd minutes and solitary strikes off the boots of Germaine Daniels (44th) and Lenardo Adams (89th) inflicted a 7-0 drubbing on Georgetown-based Black Water to advance to the next round.
After a cautious start from both teams, Williams opened the floodgates when he took full advantage of a partial save from the opposing goalkeeper to poke home.
It came as a result of a stinging shot from Butts which appeared too hot for the keeper to handle and he parried into the path of a lurking Williams who made no mistake.
He returned five minutes later to complete his brace after finishing with confidence, skipping past the advancing goalkeeper following a through pass from Adams.
One minute before the half, the score ballooned to 3-0 as Samuels used his body to effect to steer the ball over the goal line from a corner taken on the right side to make it 3-0 at the break.
The resumption brought no reprieve for the visitors as the nippy Butts created havoc and in the process stole the show.
Butts began his destruction by lashing past the hapless net stopper from a deflected ball that landed into his path and subsequently into the lower left corner to make it 4-0 and clearly a mountain for Black Water to climb.
The diminutive striker then returned to add another twenty minutes later with a goal of sheer class after collecting a pass down centre-field, swiveled nicely and in one motion cracked a fierce shot into the goal.
Playing with a lot of freedom and skill, Butts evidently was not finished and completed his treble in fine style, firing into the right corner from a neat little pass inside the box.
With Black Water offering no offensive threat, NA United attacked with vigor and got their seventh goal through Adams, who out ran his marker and let loose a thunderous shot into the roof of the net to all but assure a place in the next phase.
In the game that followed, Rosignol United aided by two defensive lapses eased past Cougars FC by a 3-0 margin.
Adrian Best and Jason DeJonge were the two culprits that registered own goals in the 41st and 88th minutes respectively, while Shane Gangoo’s 28th minute effort had given them the lead.
Another double header was expected to be played last evening at the GFC ground.
The winning team will receive $2million dollars and the championship trophy, while the runner-up, third and fourth placed finishers will take home $1million, $500,000 and $250,000 respectively along with trophies.
