Victoria Kings and Ann’s Grove into quarters
The Grove Playfield will take centre stage today when the second edition of the
Stag Super XVI knock-out football competition moves to the East Bank of Demerara for day three action. Home team and defending champions Grove Hi Tech will face off with East Demerara’s Golden Grove in the feature game of the evening with the curtain raiser bringing together Soesdyke Falcons, another East Bank side and their West Demerara counterparts, Pouderoyen.
Grove will be aiming to go all the way again but will have to first get past Golden Grove this evening in what is expected to be a stern test for the East Bank champions. With the Guyana Football Federation stipulating that no guest players would be allowed owing to the Club Licencing drive through CONCACAF and FIFA, clubs will have to ensure that they bring their ‘A’ game to the field.
Two exciting matches are envisaged at the Mecca of football on the East Bank, Grove. Booking their respective places in the quarter finals following the second day of round-or-16-action on Friday at the Victoria Community Centre ground, East Coast Demerara, were East Demerara sides Victoria Kings and last year’s beaten finalists, Ann’s Grove.
Kings, once the knock-out generals of the sport in Guyana needled West Demerara’s Stewartville, while Ann’s Grove also edged past another West Demerara team, Eagles 2-1 to secure a 100% record for host association on the night.
The Kings used home advantage to their benefit, and while dominating the encounter, were just able to breach the Stewartville’s defence on one occasion, thanks to a Alden Lawrence 29th minute goal.
Both sides looked scratchy at the start of the encounter but held their own as the game progressed where the exchanges became much more even, despite, the home team holding the upper hand.
Jaslyn Small, who stood between the uprights for Stewartville, brought his experience to bear to shore up a virtually young and inexperienced side but still stood strong despite not making the cut in this their inaugural Stag Super XVI match.
The win for the Kings earned them a quarter final date with West Demerara’s champions Uitvlugt on Christmas night at the Farm Community Centre ground and they will be looking to take care of business in this clash to earn a semi final slot. Last year they lost on penalty kicks to Ann’s Grove, 5-3.
The opening match was another close encounter that saw Ann’s Grove taking the early lead in the 11th minute through a Shafeer Sainicher goal which was cancelled out two minutes later when Eagles Shelton Forde found the equalizer. The first half saw the score locked at 1-1.
The game was virtually sealed thirteen minutes into the second half when Jermain Rogers was able to fire his shot past Eagles’ custodian Rocky Reddy to concretize Ann’s Grove’s quarter final date with West Demerara’s Beavers at the Victoria ground on Boxing night, December 26, next.
