Dear Editor,
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) had assured residents and businesses that live near that new garbage site in Eccles will not be affected by the new dump site. This assurance is misleading since the area is infested by rats. The businesses in the Industrial Site in Eccles can attest to this. Persons I know who live near to the Industrial Site Eccles are also affected. The IDB owes it to the citizens to relocate the site at their expense since they failed to ensure proper controls are in place to guarantee the safety. Rats carry some of the worse diseases.
The Inter-American Development Bank must do better monitoring of resources, whether loans or grants, given to government institutions and ensure these are properly accounted for and these massive projects benefit the citizens of this poor backward nation. This is the case, be it Solid Waste Management, Road Works, GPL, GWI, etc.
Billions are placed in the hands of these entities without the proper oversight and follow-up to get the opinion whether these benefit the nation. GPL prepaid meters are ineffective and a yoke on the citizens of this poor backward nation, yet IDB continues to fund investment in this wasteful project given the recent revelation in the news media.
Freddie Kissoon needs to speak out more and Joey Jagan also. Joey is awfully silent. He will say he is giving the government time. Freddie spoke out recently about the arrogance and incompetence he was faced with at GPL. He wrote about a similar experience at GWI sometime back when he was assisting someone. Customer Service in GWI was extremely unhelpful to him. I am sure nothing was done to remove the head of such an awful beast. Therefore the madness poor people face will continue unchecked.
Freddie needs to say why this government he supported and helped into office, continues to retain some of the incompetent and devious persons in both these institutions?
The PPP was afraid to fire some of them because they were afraid persons will claim discrimination. This government will not fire them because they perceive them as their “supporters”. This is a flawed assumption. They will find out the hard way. In the meantime, all the citizens of this poor backward nation will continue to suffer from these incompetent monstrosities. The Inter-American Development needs to wake up and question why obviously incompetent persons that were in position for years continue to remain there. This government believes Guyanese are fickle. The government and its functionaries are the ones who are fickle.
