Members of The Mount Olive Lodge hosted a party yesterday for the children at the Sophia Care Centre. The event was aimed at giving back to the community and catered for 86 of the home’s children- 50 girls and 36 boys, who are between the ages of two and 19.
The children’s home has been in existence for the past eight years, caring for children of all ethnic backgrounds.
Each child was treated to a hot meal, along with other delicacies. They all received a gift at the end of the event and danced joyfully to a number of Christmas and hit list tunes.
President of the Lodge, Trevor Meredith, told Kaieteur News that his organization would normally partake in such activities annually. He said that the organization takes pride in giving charitable donations, especially around the festive season.
Meredith explained that this is the first year they have been spreading the Christmas cheer at the home. He also assured that the event will be an annual one.
Supervisor of the home, Roxanne Blenman, said that the objective of the institution is to ensure that every child is educated and taken care of. She said that the caregivers are hands on with caring for the children 24/7.
Blenman said that the children were enrolled at the home for various reasons, but are given equal opportunities and exposure.
According to her, the children attend various schools around Georgetown. The Supervisor noted that the children have been performing well academically.
She stated that one of the girls is currently attending the University of Guyana (UG) and one of the boys is a recent graduate of Queens College with a total of 16 CSEC subjects all with distinction.
The Caregiver told this newspaper that apart from nurturing and caring for the children, the centre also affords them the opportunity to learn computer skills through various technological courses.
Blenman said that she is looking for support from the various agencies to continue with the development of the centre. She said too, that the Child Protection Agency has been playing a major role in this regard.
