Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me space in your papers to celebrate a historical positive about a Guyanese for a Change. Yes there was Shakira Baksh and others in days of old. But fast forward to Lisa Mary Johanna Punch age 22, that girl from Charlotte Street who defied the odds as a great motivation to girls not just in Guyana but everywhere in the world.
I am not your average pageantry lover, however when Lisa Mary Johanna Punch was selected to Represent Guyana, I saw the social media battles and as upset as I was I kept silent. Many of us, Guyanese home and abroad fail to realise that our odiousness often damage the image of our beloved, birth place, Guyana.
From what I saw this morning and the bits and pieces I followed on social media, I would say that Lisa has represented Guyana well, with exceptional fortitude and grace. Lisa has done only what Lisa could have done and no other selected queen would have given Guyana the recognition and representation like she did with her talent and genuine personality and for that I say congrats and thank you to Lisa and team.
Excuse my ignorance if any exists, but is it normal for the winner of * Miss World Talent, to perform twice on the night of the finals?
Seeing Lisa performing on that stage was priceless for me and the first for any Guyanese contestant and that’s reason enough to rejoice. The world listened and they saw a strong young woman with great potential and Guyana was once again recognized worldwide not for drugs or Jonestown but for our gifted youth. With that stated, I would encourage the Government of Guyana more so the Ministry of Education to pay as much attention to the talent of our youth as you place on education. My advice to Lisa Punch in the words of John Legend is “everybody knows, but nobody really knows” only God knows.
Greater things are yet to come just prepare yourself, bless you our Guyanese Queen. The queen may have won it all but our Lisa Punch sure packed a punch to walk away with much more than the crown through the judges’ nod and the hearts of the more than 1 billion Chinese alone plus the rest of millions around the world who watched and proudly applauded her every stage appearance.
