Residents of Uncle Eddie’s Home were treated to implantation of dentures, on Friday, as the Ministry of Public Health and the Cheddi Jagan Dental Centre collaborated and took their Christmas cheer to the geriatric institution.
Minister of Public Health Dr. George Norton was also on site for the visit.
He underscored that, “Oral health is important regardless of age. It is a human right and is essential to the general health of persons and their well being.”
Minister Norton added, “Excluding the 2015 batch of dental graduates from the University of Guyana, there are 69 registered dentists in the country, 39 of whom are in the public health care system. The others are in private practice. There are also 52 dental nurses, 32 dental assistants and 25 community dental therapists.”
He added that it is with the recognition of this fact that the government allocated $83.5M in the 2015 Budget for dental health services.
There are currently 58 public dental health centres across the country. Approximately 90 per cent of the Guyanese population has access to dental health services.
However, the remaining 10 per cent live in mainly hinterland areas which are difficult to access but are still on the agenda, and benefit from dental outreaches whenever possible.
The Ministry has pledged its continued commitment to work towards increasing access to dental health services and expanding its medical outreach programme, which will allow more visits to such homes.
The Minister also thanked Dr. Shameer Ali, from the Dental School for his continued dedication to his profession and the country’s people.
Lloyd De Freitas, an elderly resident of the home, thanked the government for this undertaking. He noted that he has been a resident of the home for 10 years and has never witnessed any such initiative.
