The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) held its annual Awards Ceremony on Friday night at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) pavilion at Bourda and Berbice captured all of the mayor Awards.
Albion’s left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul finished the inaugural PCL First-Class Franchise with 69 wickets and after the first half of the second edition on 17 wickets from three games to be adjudged Cricketer (Male) of the year ahead of the other two nominees Vishaul Singh and Devendra Bishoo.
West Indies women’s player Tremayne Smartt, a fast bowling all rounder from New Amsterdam based club Tucber Park, copped Female Cricketer of the year ahead of her West Indies teammate Shemaine Campbell and Guyana teammate Akaze Thompson.
West Indies under-19 left-handed opening batsman Shimron Hetmyer, who plays for Cumberland based side Young Warriors, took the youth Cricketer of the year Award and his father Gladstone Hetmyer, collected the Roy Fredericks trophy on his son’s behalf. Hetmyer, who got three Awards, is a part of the West Indies camp that is preparing for the 2016 U-19 World Cup.
Corentyne’s Albion Sports Complex captured the team of the year ahead of city side DCC and Corentyne team Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club.
Also winning Awards were little Berbician Mandy Mangru (Most improved female youth player), Vishaul Singh (Most improved cricketer), Rajendra Chandrika (Recognized for his West Indies selection), Sachin Singh (Most runs in WICB U-15 Tournament), Kevin Omroa (Most Wickets in WICB U-15 Tournament), Kelvin Anderson (Most Valuable player in Regional U-15), Ronaldo Ali Mohamed (Most Runs in WICB U-17), Bashkar Yadram (Most Wickets in Regional U-17), Hetmyer (Most runs in Regional U-19), Kemo Paul (Most wickets in WICB U-19), Balchand Baldeo (Most wickets in Regional U-17), Hetmyer (MVP Regional U-19).
Former Test Umpire Eddy Nicholls got an Award for his long and dedicated Service as an Umpire, while Jerome Inderdat got an Award for his outstanding service as a curator. Sean Devers, for the fourth time in six years took the Award for Cricket Journalist of the year, while Digicel and Banks DIH received Corporate Awards.
West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Director and Secretary of the GCB and Anand Sanasie welcomed the large gathering which included members of the touring T&T Academy U-19s, PCL and Guyana Youth Teams. Also present were President of the GOA and long serving former GCB President Chetram Singh.
President of the GCB Drubahadur provided a review of the year in cricket, while Minister
within the Ministry of Education in the department of Culture, Youth & Sports Nicolette Henry gave brief remarks.
Vice-President of the WICB, St Lucian Emmanuel Nanthan was scheduled to give the feature address but due to the death of a family member he could not make the trip to Guyana but sent his speech which was read.
There was also a video message from CEO of the WICB Michael Muirhead, while Devers responded on behalf of the Awardees before former West Indies pacer and TDO of the GCB Colin Stuart said the closing remarks.
