History has always played an important role in the development of any sport, thus the main reason former Guyana lightweight, welterweight and Continental of Americas champion Michael Benjamin in partnership with a
number of other boxing enthusiast has launched the Andrew ‘six heads’ Lewis Boxing Hall of fame.
A pictographic archive has been installed at the upper flat of the Andrew Lewis Gym situated at Independence Boulevard and Calendar Street, La Penitence, the said venue where the inauguration took place yesterday.
The venture which has been in the making for the past two years will be used to highlight the achievements of Guyanese boxers.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, president of the Guyana Olympic Association Juman Yassin complimented Ivan Chapman and members of the North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary School Steel Orchestra. He spoke of the importance of the project adding that he would like to see more Guyanese world champions. Yassin pointed out that Boxing is in the doldrums and that Boxers need to be taken care of.
Head of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, congratulated Benjamin and pledged his support for the scheme.
President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool, said this venture should have been done like 20-30 years ago stating that it is very important since it highlights the achievements of everyone who has contributed to the development of the sport. He lauded the founder members.
Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green indicated that the city has always produced talented boxers and this initiative will motivate the youths. While highlighting the feats of some of Guyana’s athletes including Michael Parris, Cliff Anderson and Andrew Lewis, Green said that sports can do wonders for a country and calls for more corporate support. He said that History will inspire the younger boxers and hope that this venture will provide same so the youths will have someone to look up to. Green feels Guyana has what it takes to win more world titles and boxing is the best avenue for Guyana to move forward. He called on the Government and private sector to invest in the sport and urged the youths to take it seriously. Guyana’s lone Olympic medalist Michael Parris touched on the importance of training.
The boxers that have been inducted into the hall of fame so far are Gary St. Clair former IBF and IBO Junior/lightweight champion, Vivian Harris-former WBA/IBA welterweight champion, Wayne Brathwaite-former WBC cruiserweight champion, the late Andrew Lewis- former WBA welterweight champion, Terrence Alli- former ESPN junior welterweight champion, Michael Parris bronze medalist 1980 Moscow Olympic games, Mike Benjamin-former Guyana lightweight, welterweight and Continental of Americas welterweight champion, Leon Moore-former Guyana /CABOFE bantamweight/NABA/FEDE/WBA/PAN Asian featherweight/WAA/WBC Super Batamweight/Continental of America champion, the late Andrew Murray former Commomwealth/Continental of Americas champion and Shondell Alfred-WIBA/Iberian and Guyana Batamweight champion.
