Almost 500 persons – mostly senior citizens – were recipients of food hampers as the
Salvation Army held its annual Christmas hamper distribution at its South Road and Alexander Street Headquarters.
The proceedings kicked off with a musical interlude by the Worship Band, which had persons jumping out of their seats, grabbing a partner and waltzing, as those who remained seated rang bells and cheered.
First of the guest speakers to address the gathering was the Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence, who said that she was delighted to be in the presence of her “boys and girls”.
She commended the Salvation Army on its “unwavering effort to provide help and care to the most vulnerable” especially during the season of love, laughter and joy.
She also spoke about the government’s commitment in improving the lives of senior citizens and urged that they too, must take their rightful places in society as teachers and as models.
“The Ministry of Social Protection is committed; we are committed to improving the lives of our boys and girls. We cherish and value your contribution, and wish to assure you that we
will not renege on our promise of a better life for all; and that includes you.
“This ministry will continue to work in close collaboration with you, our senior boys and girls and the young population, so that you can enjoy improved living conditions for all – How yuh like how de city lookin’?” Lawrence asked as the gathering applauded.
First Lady, Sandra Granger said, that the elderly are precious, deserved to be honoured and recognised for the contributions that they have made over the years. She also reflected on the many instances where the Salvation Army would come to the rescue of those in need of help.
She also said that she will be working with the ministry in ensuring better lives for the elderly. In closing; she extended Christmas wishes to the gathering on behalf of the President and herself.
Major Carolinda Cumberbatch said that the hampers were made available due to contributions made by persons through donations to the “kettlers” and whatever resources the Salvation Army had. She also pointed out that distributions are also scheduled to commence in New Amsterdam, Linden, Vergenoegen, Mahaicony and East La Penitence.
