– Assessments to be conducted in late April 2016
Additional time has been granted for the completion of the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) curriculum. This announcement was yesterday made by the Ministry of Education by way of a press statement.
It was outlined that the Ministry has decided to extend the dates by one month to give teachers sufficient time to complete the NGSA curriculum and give pupils more time within which to prepare for the Assessments.
The NGSA will therefore be held on Wednesday April 27 and Thursday April 28, 2016. Previously the Assessments were conducted earlier in the month. It was noted that the teachers have been advocating for additional time to be granted for some time now.
In the meantime, logistical preparations and quality assurance mechanisms are being put in place for the efficient administration of Assessments in April 2016.
Moreover, parents and candidates preparing to take the assessments are asked to note English Language Paper Two will be administered on the morning of Wednesday April 27 at 09:00-09:55 hours; English Language Paper 1 will be administered at 10:30-11:40 hours.
The afternoon of the same day will see Science Paper One being administered at 13:00-14:10 hours after which Science Paper Two will be administered at 14:30 – 15:25 hours.
The following day (Thursday April 28) Mathematics Paper One and Paper Two will be administered at 09:00-10:00 hours and 10:45-11:40 hours respectively. In the afternoon of the same day, Social Studies Paper One and Two will be administered at 13:00-14:10 hours and 14:30-15:25 hours respectively.
Meanwhile, the Ministry reminded that with immediate effect, the inclusion of the Grades Two and Four Assessments will no longer be considered to ascertain the NGSA score. This therefore means that NGSA 2016 will not include grades obtained from the recent
Grades Two and Four Assessments.
The Grade Two and Four Assessments will be used strictly for diagnostic purposes, as was initially intended.
Previously five per cent of each candidate’s National Grade Two Assessment scores in Mathematics and English and 10 per cent of the National Grade Four Assessments scores in the same subjects were added to 85 per cent of each candidate’s NGSA score in the same subject areas. The combined scores in Mathematics and English were added to the scores gained in Science and Social Studies.
In the statement disseminated yesterday, the Ministry urged that schools put the necessary systems in place for the results of these Assessments to be the basis for strategic interventions aimed at overcoming identified weaknesses of pupils.
The Ministry also encouraged parents to continue to work with their children to ensure that they improve in any subject area that is considered a challenge to them.
