A Lethem goldminer will be spending the Christmas holiday behind bars after he was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for the murder of a Brazilian man yesterday.
The man, Michael Melville, 29, of Waramadong, Upper Mazaruni, is accused of murdering Jose Oliveira Silva between December 2 and December 5 at Arau, Wenamu River.
The body of the 62-year-old man was found on December 5, with marks of violence. According to reports, Silva and another man were involved in a fight during which he was chopped about his body.
Melville was arrested by police last Friday, at Kaikan. He will return to court on March 21, in the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court.
