Another specialist in the field of Information Technology has copped the
Best Cop award for the second year in a row.
Deputy Superintendent Shivpersaud Bacchus copped the coveted award yesterday, in the face of stiff challenges from ranks of the Criminal Investigations Department.
Bacchus, who is attached to the Police Computer Training Centre at the Felix Austin Police College, won the award thanks to his excellent working in designing, developing and delivering training programmes for the ranks of the Guyana Police Force from Constable to Assistant Commissioner of Police.
In all it was revealed that since he has embarked on the programmes, 1,637 ranks have been trained along with residents in various parts of the country who have been benefitting from their close interactions with the police.
Bacchus also manages three Zara Computer Centres in each of the counties of Guyana with very little supervision.
“This officer continues to perform at an extremely high standard. He delivers excellent results,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police, Balram Persaud.
In accepting the award, Bacchus said that the decision to join the Guyana Police Force was one of the best he has ever made.
He credited his wife for her support, which has been unwavering, especially with regard to the kind of environment Bacchus operates in.
He said that his award is made more satisfying, since in the past the Best Cop was mostly selected from among hardcore crime fighters like ranks from the Criminal Investigations Department.
He said that now that the force is placing a lot of emphasis on Information Technology, it should not be a surprise that those who play an integral role in the field are recognized.
“Information technology is very important to the crime fighting strategies of the Guyana Police Force. A lot of crimes have been solved through IT,” said Bacchus who has been in the Guyana Police Force for more than 15 years.
Bacchus’ award follows that of Inspector Jermaine Johnson, another IT Specialist who copped the award last year.
The award comes with a cash prize of $250,000, plus a return ticket to New York and a dinner for two at the Duke Lodge Restaurant. Another prize is the trip for two to Arrowpoint resort.
The Deputy Superintendent beat off the challenge of Detective Corporal Derwin Eastman, who also turned in a special performance throughout the year.
Several other ranks were rewarded for their crime fighting efforts, among them was a female rank from the Corentyne, who single handedly orchestrated the arrest of a drug trafficking suspect while they were travelling in a minibus.
