Dear Editor,
Please allow me space in your newspaper vent my frustration at being used by the Commander of the Police of A Division who seems bent on building his personal image at the expense of the junior ranks.
I believe that I can speak for many ranks of the Division, who like me feel that something must be done if our morale and dignity are to be maintained. I wish first to address the matter of the Commander being the head of the Georgetown Football Association. Editor, our beef is not with the Commander wearing two hats and whether he can divide his time to suit the two portfolios; it’s with that fact that he has drawn us into the football fray.
We are now being told that we as ordinary police ranks, especially those in the Traffic Department are being force to contribute financially to offset football related expenses, such as providing Gatorade for footballers. If we don’t, we are subjected to verbal abuse. It would also appear that our prospects for promotion are jeopardized. How could this be fair?
Another concern stems from the recent children’s party hosted by the Division. The invitees were our own children and the youths from the various youth groups in the city. Sir we had to go out like beggars and solicit the assistance from the business community to secure gifts for the guests. Yet when the gifts were distributed, the first recipients were the children from the youth groups, while our children had to wait on the crumbs which turned out to not be enough.
Then to crown it off our Sergeants and Inspectors were forced to fork out $9000 to contribute to a party at the Marriott hotel, even if they did not attend. These things are not right. We are living in a democracy where everyone is free to make choices and not be dictated to. I hope that by exposing these practices, we the hardworking ranks of A Division will see some change in the attitude of the administration.
